Aug. 4, 2011 Now that the US Congress raised the debt limit, we can take a deep sigh of relief. At least the moment of truth has been delayed before the American Economy Bus goes off the cliff. The result of this decision is simply the US will owe more money than before and this will fix nothing. The only fix is to cut expenses. The biggest problem is that the US has become ungovernable. Congressmen and Senators are beholden to special interest lobbyists or see solutions through an ideological prism. There is also a great reluctance to cut military expenditures and admit that wars cost money, a great deal of money. Here is a graph developed by the Stockholm International Peace Institute comparing the five top military budgets in the world for 2010
Pretty dramatic difference, don´t you think? This does not include special funding for Iraq and Afghanistan. Nor does it include military assistance to Israel, Taiwan, Colombia, Egypt. Nor it includes post-war costs of injured veterans. When we add those expenses, over a trillion dollars are removed from taxpayer pockets and recycled into smoke, fire and things that go kaboom. Does the US need such military expenditures? A child can tell that the US doesn´t.
Oh, and I forgot the big bucks spent by Homeland Security in response to terrorism, which was spawned by the arrogance created by having such a huge military.
