The President's Call To Arms

By Meri Ulrich
Jan. 25, 2011

I have NO intention of listening to a consummate politician lie to the American public and call it a "State of the Union" speech.

I did want to comment on the President's call to arms to the Congress to unite in the wake of the shootings in Tucson. Really? Is he insinuating that the Congress pass a law declaring that all paranoid schizophrenics and others who suffer from extreme mental illness be shot on sight? Let's face it, it is now clear as a bell that the shooter in Tucson had no political motives whatsoever; he was loony tunes and that's the reason why he shot Congresswoman Giffords and the other victims.

He wanted to get the maximum attention possible so he chose a member of Congress. I believe that the rest of his victims were collateral damage and that he had absolutely NO political motives when he aimed and fired his gun more than 30 times on that tragic Saturday. Sheriff STUP-nik was wrong and so is Obama for using this as a political forum. Actually, it's a terrible insult to those who were injured and killed to make political hay out of the actions of a mentally ill individual and I'm ashamed of those who did.

Many jumped on the Sheriff's bandwagon right after the shootings to blame the always "evil" right wing republicans and those who seem to speak for them on both television and radio. Of course, no one EVER utters a word steeped in hatred or defiance from the left wing of politics. Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Glen Beck and the Moose who roared in Alaska are totally responsible for the young man who suffered from delusions among other mental aberrations. They and ONLY they hold the key to why this mess of a human being shot those people. Give me a break.

The fact that there were red flags waving so high in this young man's life that one had to be deaf, dumb and blind not to see them counts for nothing? The fact that parents ignored their sick boy and were too afraid of him to take any action counts for nothing?

Yes, members of Congress and all those who serve should be protected and since more than eleven police officers have been shot within the last two days alone, I advocate for harsher punishments and longer sentences for those on parole for dangerous crimes. I also advocate for more availability to mental health services for those who are as obviously ill as the young man who shot up Tucson. In that respect I will "unite" with anyone who wants to put those ideas on a ballot.

If the President wants me to "unite" with the notion that mental illness is now a political issue than he can take his "State of the Union" message and shove it. He can put it with all of the other unfulfilled promises that I have heard him and other President's spew throughout the years.

I am no longer listening to the bullsh!t. There are far more important issues to deal with in my life...like eating and trying to pay my mortgage payment and buying medications without having to take out a large loan that I will no longer qualify for.

Jared Loughner was not, is not and never will be a politician nor was he speaking for any particular political party. He was is and will most likely always be a very sick young man who should be locked up for life.

Let the hate mail begin!!!
